Rossie
Trustees
Meeting held at Rossie Young People’s Trust, Montrose
Voluntary Position
Rossie is one of Scotland’s longest-established providers of children’s services and has been supporting vulnerable young people since 1857. Today, the organisation is one of only four secure care providers in Scotland, delivering residential care, secure care, education, health, and therapeutic support for young people with complex needs and experiences of trauma.
Located on the east coast of Scotland, Rossie operates at the intersection of care, education, justice, and public policy. Regulated by the Care Inspectorate, HMIe, and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), the organisation provides highly specialised support for young people aged 10–18 within a safe, nurturing, and trauma-informed environment.
Rossie is committed to helping young people build resilience, improve wellbeing, and maximise their potential through integrated care, education, and therapeutic interventions tailored to individual needs. The organisation has earned multiple national awards and continues to invest in development, innovation, and service improvement, with a clear ambition to remain at the forefront of care provision in Scotland.
This is a significant period for Rossie and for the wider secure care sector. Legislative reform, evolving inspection frameworks, and changes to commissioning and funding structures are reshaping how services are delivered across Scotland. Rossie is exceptionally well placed to help shape that future, supported by a strong operational foundation, a clear sense of purpose, and a Board committed to providing effective strategic leadership and governance.
About the Role of Trustee
Rossie is seeking to appoint new Trustees to join its Board as part of a planned strengthening of governance and succession planning. The organisation is particularly interested in individuals who can contribute insight and leadership across several strategic priority areas as Rossie continues to evolve within a changing operating environment.
As a Trustee, you will work collaboratively with fellow Board members and the Executive team to support the long-term sustainability, governance, and strategic direction of the organisation. Trustees are expected to bring independent judgement, constructive challenge, and professional expertise, while remaining focused on the wellbeing and outcomes of the young people in Rossie’s care.
Responsibilities:
• Contribute to the strategic direction and long-term development of Rossie
• Provide effective governance, oversight, and accountability across the organisation
• Support and challenge the Executive team constructively
• Contribute to Board and committee discussions, bringing independent perspective and professional insight
• Review performance, risk, compliance, and organisational priorities
• Support Rossie in navigating a changing policy, regulatory, and funding landscape
• Attend Board and committee meetings and contribute fully to preparation and discussion
Rossie is particularly interested in individuals with senior-level experience in one or more of the following areas:
Commercial Strategy and Organisational Development
Senior leaders who can bring commercial insight, strategic thinking, and experience operating within complex or regulated environments. This may include experience in sectors such as financial services, healthcare, infrastructure, housing, energy, professional services, or other areas where policy, funding, and strategic decision-making intersect.
Regulated Services, Governance, and Compliance
Individuals with experience overseeing quality, compliance, governance, audit, or inspection frameworks within regulated settings. This could include backgrounds in healthcare, education, legal services, housing, financial regulation, or public sector governance.
Capital Projects, Estates, or Infrastructure
Professionals with expertise in property, construction, estates management, infrastructure, or capital programme governance who can support oversight of Rossie’s ongoing estate development and investment activity.
Mental Health, Wellbeing, or Clinical Governance
Individuals with senior experience within health, wellbeing, psychology, clinical governance, or related disciplines who can contribute informed oversight around therapeutic quality, mental health, and wellbeing services for young people.
Beyond professional background, Rossie is looking for individuals who bring integrity, sound judgement, emotional resilience, and the confidence to contribute constructively within a complex and highly regulated environment. Strong communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to balance support with appropriate challenge will be important.
Trustees should be comfortable engaging with sensitive and sometimes challenging subject matter while maintaining strategic oversight and a focus on achieving positive long-term outcomes for young people.
Time Commitment
There are eight Board meetings per year, alongside an annual strategy day. Trustees are also expected to serve on at least one Board committee, with additional committee meetings held throughout the year.
